44 Countries & 7 Billion To Face Intense Water Shortage By 2040

The consequences of Climate Change are slowly trying to materialize in already fragile world with social inequalities, poverty and wars. With extreme heat waves, rising sea level and unsustainable use of fossil fuels, Planet earth is believed to have been facing the worst climate crisis that can lead to extinction or even nuclear wars in the near future. Earlier this year, Pakistan, India, Europe, China, Africa and the United States faced extreme heat waves across major parts of the countries leading to wildfires and billions of losses in economic activity.

The Institute for the Economic Research University of Bonn, Germany, recently published a report reaching a horrifying conclusion. The report mentioned that 44 countries with nearly 7 billion people can face extreme water shortages. Prof. Dr Yannis Maniatistmentioned that Mediterranean countries and the European union will have the hardest time trying to mitigate the consequences. Droughts and water shortages are assumed to have become normal for Europe as 30% of Europeans are affected by the water stress situation on average, a report of EEA, European Economic Area, mentioned last year.

By 2025, more than 2.8 billion people around the world will become the target of water scarcity and the numbers will increase to around 6-7 billion by 2040. The scientists have already prophesied for extreme food shortages as the world’s agriculturally rich areas are suffering around the globe due to water shortages  and effects of climate change and have said that the results can cause a nuclear warfare in the future. Additionally, global warming can also lead to a severe financial crisis followed by pandemics leading to the extinction of the human species by 2070.

Study also revealed that Europe is currently facing its atrocious and one of the longest droughts in the last 5 centuries. Furthermore, the experts mentioned how water is consumed not just for irrigation purposes but also to produce many important products. For example, one kg of cheese requires 5605 liters of water. Other areas which require the most water are textile industries, rice production, farming etc which needs to be guided towards acquiring sustainable means of producing the outcomes.
